The planetary nebula A 78 is known to exhibit structure and expansion velocities which are strikingly different in different spectral lines. Photographic Fabry-Perot interferometry and direct imaging in the H-alpha line have yielded a significant velocity structure. A confrontation of the velocity field obtained at 88 points, with the H-alpha image, together with the filamentary details of A 78 on PSS red plates, has led to the conclusion that the formation of the nebula has not been isotropic: it is essentially the product of collimated outflow from a region 8 deg at the far side of the equator of a rotating object with its axis inclined to the line-of-sight by 21 deg. The outflow velocity in H-alpha is about 27 km/s.
