The MACHO collaboration has now detected ~280 microlensing events of stars toward our Galactic center fields. The event rate towards the Galactic center exceeds predictions that preceded the microlensing experiments, and the nature and distribution of the lensing population is an open question. A crucial ingredient in unraveling the existing observations is ascertaining where the lensed stars lie along the line of sight, since more distant stars have a larger chance of being lensed. We are proposing to obtain spectra and JHK photometry of lensed objects in order to 1) characterize their kinematic properties, and 2) obtain spectral types and use infrared (IR) data to facilitate spectral parallax and reddening determinations. We would also like to take spectra of a number of unlensed stars in the same fields. A comparison between the properties of lensed and unlensed stars can provide additional constraints on the Galactic center region morphology.
