Accurate (mean error ±1.5 km s-1) relative radial velocities of 84 stars in the region of the open cluster NGC 3532, determined from Fehrenbach objective prism spectra, are interpreted:
1. Improved orbital elements of the previously (Gieseking, 1981) discovered spectroscopic binaries HD 95878, HD 96307, HD 96881, and HD 96896 are given. The previously suspected radial velocity variability of HD 96226 cannot be established. HD 96809 is newly suspected to show long-term radial velocity changes.
2. The observed relative radial velocity distribution for field and cluster stars is represented by a superposition of two gaussian distributions with different dispersions. The cluster is clearly identified both by its considerably smaller radial velocity dispersion and its significantly distinct space motion relative to the field. Quantitative membership probabilities are given.
3. Intrinsic radial velocity dispersions of the observed cluster members and field stars are derived.
4. By comparison with the morphological dimensions of the cluster, a cluster halo is identified consisting of stars which share the cluster motion. The small, small to medium and large radial velocity dispersions of the cluster-, halo- and field population, respectively, are compared.
