A kinematic dynamo model is examined which consists of three rotating spherical conductors located in a stationary medium of the same conductivity. In this model, the distribution of rotational angular velocities assures dynamo operation at minimum values of the magnetic Reynolds number, and each sphere generates a primary axisymmetric quadrupole toroidal field as well as a secondary azimuthal field in the vicinity of one other sphere. The cases of a symmetric and a nearly symmetric arrangement of the spheres are analyzed, and an approximate solution to the problem of field generation is obtained by taking the leading field harmonics into account. It is shown that the most efficient dynamo is produced in a substantially asymmetric model where all three spheres have the same rotational angular velocity.
