Proper Motions: Methods Of Reduction, Proper Motions: Surveys
Scientific paper
A simple method is proposed for dealing with the kinematic bias which complicates the analysis of samples selected by proper motion. The technique is illustrated by an application to real data, where it yields a velocity ellipsoid for the old disk population which is in good agreement with one obtained from an unbiased sample by Sandage and Fouts (1987). When combined with methods for dealing with mixed populations, the approach should prove useful in studies of the Galactic disk-halo transition, where knowledge of the relationships between metallicity, age, and kinematics is crucial.
