A new component of terrestrial continuum has been detected by the Geotail satellite at frequencies of 100 to 800 kHz within about 10° of the magnetic equator in the dayside and evening sectors of the Earth's magnetosphere. This previously-undetected component of continuum, which is found to be unrelated to magnetic activity, is presumably generated at the plasma frequency inside the plasmasphere, at altitudes extending downward into the topside region of the ionosphere.
