The authors have compared two versions of a kilometric interferometer with equivalent science capabilities, one located on the moon and the other operating as a free flying instrument. They have concluded that the free-flyer is better suited for an implementation in the near or mid-term future, but that the moon-based version should be considered in the long term in conjunction with a manned lunar infrastructure.
