Certain aspects of flare theory are reviewed in an attempt to distinguish between real difficulties and unresolved problems, on the one hand, and fictitious difficulties caused by traditional inadequacies or incorrect analyses, on the other. The hypothesis that magnetic fields constitute the energy source for solar flares is discussed, along with coronal currents as a source of free magnetic energy, current configurations in the corona, pinched current sheets, a quasi-steady current sheet as the preflare state, and flare generation due to the tearing-mode, thermal, or drift instabilities of current sheets. Several unresolved questions in flare theory are outlined.
