UGC5101 is an ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) at a redshift of 0.04. Using NIRSPEC on the Keck Telescope, we have obtained H and K band spectroscopy of UGC5101 with a seeing of 0.5". The excellent seeing conditions allow us to probe the conditions at a close distance to the central nucleus. By examining the equivalent widths of the CO bandheads located in the H and K bands, we have traced the stellar population, and we find convincing evidence for a central starburst containing red supergiants. In addition, equivalent width measurements of the lines of Brackett Gamma and molecular hydrogen as well as absorption lines have shown strong evidence for a central dilution consistent with a central hot dust source, pointing strongly to the presence of a buried AGN at the center of UGC5101. Our spectra also include one starburst cluster(identified in NICMOS imaging by Scoville et al. 2000) lying approximately 4" from the central nucleus of UGC5101, and we analyze the stellar population of that cluster and compare that to the population of the nuclear region.
