Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 flybys have yielded new data on the giant planet as have earth-based observations with new techniques, and studies using high-flying aircraft, but puzzles and anomalies persist. Jovian magnetism, the atmosphere of the Jovian moon Io, cloud belt features, the rotation of Jupiter and its satellites, Jovian radio emission and cosmic radiation, Jupiter's intrinsic energy, and compounds (some organic) detected in the Jovian atmosphere are some of the problems covered. Theories proposed to account for the early history of the planet recapitulate in some ways theories on the origin of the solar system, and even of the universe. Jupiter studies may also yield insights on the origin of cosmic radiation and their possible relation to pulsars.
