It is shown that high pressures and temperatures in Jupiter's molecular-hydrogen layer can result in electrical conductivity that is sufficient enough to affect the planet's hydrodynamic dynamo mechanism. Some observations on insulator-metal transitions are reviewed which indicate that condensed molecular hydrogen becomes highly conductive at certain temperatures and pressures without changing its molecular character. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the molecular-hydrogen layer could be the source of the Jovian magnetic field and that this might explain the strength of the higher than dipole field components observed by Pioneers 10 and 11.
