The Voyager 1 mission to Jupiter has yielded data on a wide variety of features, both on the planetary surface and on the Jovian moons. Attention is given to the intense lightning storms on the dark side of the planet, and to meteorological phenomena such as the Great Red Spot and weather systems resembling terrestrial blocking highs. The gravity-distorted moon Amalthea, and the four major (Galilean) moons are also discussed. At least eight active volcanoes have been detected on Io, the surface of which is being constantly reformed by the ejection of sulfurous salts. On Ganymede, ridges and grooves which may be signs of fracturing by tectonic forces have been noted.
