The origins of Jupiter C/Juno I, the first U.S. satellite launcher, are described. Although Juno I saw only six launches and three successes it contributed a great deal to the beginning of the space age, providing a sound base for the second-generation launchers to build on. The three small Explorer satellites provided information on the near-earth space environment far in excess of their size and their experimenters' hopes.
