The fabrication and performance of Josephson triodes based on the microcontact-type Josephson junctions (JJs) proposed by Yolshimori et al. (1986) are reported. The JJs are fabricated on Si substrates by a self-alignment process involving the method of two resist layers, electron-beam exposure, reactive ion etching, and deposition of an Nb film by vacuum evaporation. For the triode (in which three JJs function as frequency-variable local oscillator, converter, and isolator, respectively), the same fabrication technique is employed, except that the Nb is applied by dc-magnetron sputtering. The triode I-V characteristics demonstrate negative-resistance phenomena and current steps in the absence of external EM waves, in good general agreement with theoretical computations. Applications to sensitive heterodyne mixing devices for mm or submm radio astronomy are indicated.
