A large amount of information will come from future cosmic microwave background measurements. Yet how much of this information is about dark energy? In this work, we determine the principal modes for the dark energy equation of state when realistic experiments are taken into account. Particularly, we study the ability of CMB lensing data to pin down higher redshift variations in the equation of state, and the entanglement of such modes with other cosmological parameters.
