The peculiar galaxy NGC 3448 has been investigated from both H I 21-cm line observations and photographs and spectra obtained at a dispersion of 240 and 35 A/mm. The H I emission of NGC 3448 has been clearly discriminated from that of its dwarf companion, and the pair could be bound. The dwarf companion has the overall properties expected for its class. From its H I properties, its relatively high excitation, its patchy distribution of H II regions, and its low oxygen abundance, NGC 3448 does not fit an SO type. On the contrary, it is suggested that NGC 3448 is a late-type galaxy (Sd or Sm), with a very peculiar nucleus.
