Geomagnetic Field: Variations

Scientific paper

To expose jerks in the geomagnetic field, the field changes according to the yearly averages from the world network of magnetic observatories were examined over the past 60 years. A technique of piecewise-linear approximation of series of the secular trends over the time interval examined is proposed. The statistical significance of the model adopted is demonstrated. The jerks isolated are characterized by the intersection of straight lines of different slopes in the first differentials of the field. It is shown that the 1969 jerk did not differ in form from similar phenomena at the end of the 1940s. Other epochs of jerks are noted that are statistically coordinated with years of maximum solar activity, although the processing method excluded phenomena related to the 11-year solar cycle.
