The occurrence of jerks in the geomagnetic field during 1930-1980 is investigated on the basis of global network data using a piecewise-linear approximation of secular variation series for this time period. Jerks are identified which are characterized by the intersection of straight lines of different slope in the first field derivatives. It is shown that the jerk of 1969 does not differ in form from analogous phenomena at the end of the 1940s. Other jerk epochs are identified which are statistically associated with solar maximum years.
