Density fluctuations of a cosmological quantum real scalar field in a coherent state are interpreted as Bogoliubov compressional excitations of a condensed Bose-Einstein gas. The Jeans instability mechanism is generalized in this fully quantum context. The evolution of the Jeans mass in a FRW Universe that emerges from an inflationary stage is then studied in the nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic phases. The behavior of the Jeans mass is found to be qualitatively similar, although quantitatively different, to that of a fermion matter field. The introduction of the gauge-invariant formalism is necessary to find the time evolution of the perturbations in the radiation dominated stage.
