Globally IYA has been an amazing experience, as it has been in Canada. But how well have we done in Canada towards meeting our vision, "To offer an engaging astronomy experience to every person in Canada, and to cultivate partnerships that sustain public interest in astronomy"? We will report on our efforts to:
• have >1,000,000 Canadians experience a `Galileo Moment’ of personal astronomical discovery
• develop new education and public outreach materials and improve the formal and informal educational systems; and to
• form new partnerships that bridge between astronomy and diverse sectors of society, e.g., underserved communities (Aboriginal, inner-city, rural and remote, etc.), the arts, the parks systems, etc.
One key fact to be emphasized is how strongly amateur astronomers and enthusiastic members of diverse segments of Canadian society have contributed throughout 2009 to make IYA the success we perceive it to have been. We will conclude with the plans to maintain momentum and achieve the desired legacies.
