In 2003 and 2005 the Gemini Observatory Public Information and Outreach office (To contact the authors email {jharvey@gemini.edu} or {pmichaud@gemini.edu}.) spearheaded a partnership with our local host-community's leading newspapers to create a newspaper supplement on astronomy in Hawaii and Chile. The resulting publications (twice in Hawaii and once in Chile) were extremely successful by any measure and serve as a model for local media partnerships--especially for IYA. This paper will summarize the key issues involved in creating a partnership with a local newspaper that will result in a successful publication that satisfies the newspaper, advertisers, readers and the astronomers and institutions featured in the supplement. For IYA an initiative has begun that would help communities in producing newspaper supplements on astronomy for IYA as part of the working group for Science Centers, Planetaria and Observatory Visitors Centers. Finally, a summary of this and other initiatives of this working group will be shared and participants will be allowed to exchange ideas for IYA programming.
