IN this article we report our measurements of the age of Ivory Coast microtektites, and discuss the association of microtektites with geomagnetic reversals. Microtektites are small glassy particles (<1 mm) found in sediment cores from the oceans adjacent to the Australasian and Ivory Coast tektite fields1. They resemble tektites in outward form and composition. Comparatively few microtektites have been recovered so far, but Cassidy et al.2 believe that the total mass of Australasian microtektites may be at least 1010 kg, which is 105 times larger than the estimated mass of the tektites.
