Scientific paper

The Pioneer Venus mission and the Voyager mission to Jupiter and Saturn are reviewed. Also discussed briefly are telescopic observations of the Uranian satellites, Triton, Pluto, and the asteroids, as well as studies with earth-bound radar. Pioneer Venus provided data on the particles and field environment, the surface, and the upper atmosphere. Voyager at Jupiter produced information on the Jovian atmosphere, Io, and the Galilean satellites, while Voyager at Saturn provided data on the planet's upper atmospheric thermal structure and composition, and its satellites. In addition, Voyager radio occultation data on Saturn's rings demonstrated that ring particles have an approximate power law size distribution from 1 cm to a maximum of 1-5 m.
