The class of stars known as Algols, binary systems in which one star transfers mass to its companion, is examined. It is shown that the theoretical models of these systems are not accurate since the rate of mass transfer is high, which results in contact binary systems. Attention is focused on studies of interacting binary systems undergoing rapid mass transfer utilizing data obtained by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. One of the findings of these studies is that part of the transferred material stays around the hotter star, part is accreted, and part is lost from the system.
