Interstellar column densities determined from optical and ultraviolet absorption line data can have large uncertainties due to curve-of-growth effects. One potentially powerful method for finding accurate column densities includes simultaneously fitting optical data (with resolutions of a few km/s) and ultraviolet absorption data (which provide a wider range of species at greater sensitivity). Given the large number of parameters in such a fitting procedure, care must be taken in determining the reliability and uniqueness of the fits. We compare a non-linear functional fitting method with the down-hill simplex method to determine the reliability, efficiency, and applicability of the two methods. We present diagnostics for both methods that help analyze the number and types of absorption components that can be detected through fitting the ultraviolet data.
