Cosmology: Singularities

Scientific paper

Isotropic cosmological singularities form a class of cosmological singularities which are at once mathematically tractable and physically significant. Einstein's field equations for cosmologies with these singularities lead to a class of singular Cauchy problems for which one would like to have existence and uniqueness theorems. Present techniques are just arriving at the point where these theorems can be proved. In this article, which combines the two related talks by the two authors, they review the theory for Einstein's equations with a perfect fluid source and then discuss the extension of the theory to cosmologies whose source is massless, collisionless matter - that is solutions of the massless Einstein-Vlasov equations.
