The content and isotopic composition of fixed nitrogen (NH + 4 -N) in metasedimentary rocks (phyllites, mica schists and gneisses) from prograde metamorphic zones in the Erzgebirge (Saxon Ore Mountains, G.D.R.) were measured, and show that the nitrogen content decreases and 15 N increases with increasing metamorphic grade. The geochemical and isotopic behaviour of nitrogen during contact-metamorphism was investigated in a mica schist profile through the contact aureole of a granitic pluton. The nitrogen concentrations of the wall rocks decrease towards the contact, whereas the 15 N values become higher. Various model experiments were carried out in the laboratory to explain the changes observed in the rock samples. The nitrogen isotope fractionation factor was determined for the isotopic exchange in the system ammonium sulphate/ammonia at 250°C ( = 1.014 3 ± 0.0012) and 350°C ( = 1.012 8 ± 0.0006). In accordance with the model experiments the conclusion seems warranted that the change in nitrogen content and its isotopic composition in rocks during metamorphic processes depend mainly on the metamorphic temperature.
