Spectral Absorption By Atmospheric Gases, Infrared Spectrometers, Auxiliary Equipment, And Techniques

We have used FTIR absorption spectroscopy at both low (1 cm-1) and high (0.004 cm-1) resolution to measure small variations in the natural abundance of isotopes in CO2. Quantitative analysis of the spectra was by Classic Least Squares using calculated calibration spectra. At low resolution, we achieve precision in the 13C/12C ratio of 0.15‰ for CO2 in dried whole air samples, and demonstrate field measurements of the isotopic fractionation of carbon by plants in an actively growing pasture. Using high resolution, we discriminate the 13C, 17O and 18O isotopomers of CO2 and achieve a measurement precision for the oxygen isotope ratios of 2-4‰. A number of potential applications in atmospheric chemistry are described.
