Even though the data on isotope composition and the concentration of noble gases in the atmosphere of Mars presented by Owen et al. (1977) are not highly precise, they are considered suitable for estimating the extent of degasification and the abundance of certain elements. In particular, the data bearing on the concentration of volatile elements can be compared with the corresponding values for the earth. It is assumed that the concentrations of uranium are nearly the same for Mars and the earth (approximately 0.03 g/t). If it is further assumed that the Pu-244/U-238 ratio is equal to 0.015, that is, that the formation of Mars was coeval with the formation of chondrites, then the abundance of fission xenon for the planet as a whole can be calculated: 5.2 x 10 to the -12th g/cu cm.
