A description of the Infrared Spaced Observatory (ISO), (whose launch is planned for Sep. 1995), is presented. The results of cryogenic tests and the current development status are also presented. The ISO is build up around a 60 cm telescope, cooled down to about 3K from an open helium gas loop. Helium is stored in a tank of 2250 liters at 1.8 K. It evaporates across a phase separator. It is designed for an autonomy of 18 months in orbit, for astronomical observation. The whole satellite is 5.3 m long, 2.5 m wide, and weighs about 2400 kg, including 310 kg for helium.
