It is demonstrated that the interstellar gas may be unstable to the isentropic growth of linear perturbations in regions where the molecular transitions governing the cooling of the gas are thermalized and where strong heat sources are present. The possibility that such instabilities lead to the formation of protostars and interstellar masers is discussed.
