Due to the availability of inexpensive, standardized distribution media such as the CD-ROM, calls have been issued in the planetary science community to de-emphasize centralized data management and replace it with descriptive information published along with the data. Recently-implemented CD-ROM distribution by the Planetary Data System has meant that science data and its meta-data are no longer immured in a central facility, but instead are widely available for research at many institutions. While recognizing that this practice does fulfill immediate needs for information at home institutions, we will show that it does not lessen the need for centralized information management. Instead, this complementary technology increases the need for information management, as the distributed network of researchers needs to be kept apprised of the issue of, and changes to, published data sets.
