The two peaks in Trimble's (1974) distribution of the mass ratio q in spectroscopic binaries are composed largely of single-lined and double-lined binaries, respectively. The true distribution of q therefore is masked by the bias imposed not only by discovery probability, but also by the probability of any given binary being followed up, once discovered. This is hard to quantify but is probably much higher for double-lined systems. The true relative frequency of single and double-lined systems may be estimated from data published recently by Andersen and his colleagues, and it suggests that the real distribution of q increases monotonically as q approaches zero.
