We present initial results from a controlled numerical experiment to determine whether CME onset requires reconnection or can be driven primarily by loss of plasma equilibrium. The early onset of the kink instability proceeds with little reconnection in traditional MHD simulations, but still at a nonzero rate. After the initial onset of the instability, reconnection proceeds rapidly across the newly formed current sheet, contributing to the ejection of the kink. We have simulated the kink instability driven purely by loss of plasma equilibrium - in the absence of numerical reconnection - as an early step to understanding the role of reconnection in CME evolution.
