Experimental results on the form of the irregularity produced by the stratification of electron density near the F2-layer maximum are presented and correlated with ray-tracking calculations of decameter waves propagating in this medium. Vertical-sounding data from South American observatories are used. The results obtained confirm the feasibility of using the irregular structure of the tropical ionosphere as a wave channel in which radio waves propagate in trapped trajectories.
