Total electron content (TEC) measured by Faraday technique at Tucuman is used to checked the validity of International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)-90 and the Base Point Model (BPM) to predict TEC at the southern crest of the equatorial anomaly region. In the literature it has been reported that the new version of IRI underestimates TEC in the low latitude region by about 10%. In a previous work BPM was used to calculate TEC over Tucuman for a given particular time around the daily minimum from true electron density bottomside profile alone. In the present work the BPM is used to calculate monthly hourly median values of TEC at all hours of the day. To accomplish this, two Chapman profile expressions for the electron density (n) distribution in the F region are assumed, and the characteristics at the F region base point are calculated from routine ionogram data. It is shown that both models overestimate TEC for the period 00-10 LT and underestimate it during the rest of the day. However, it can be seen that TEC values obtained with the BPM are closer to the experimental data than those obtained with IRI. Moreover, it is observed that for September IRI underestimates the maximum TEC values by about 45%. The obtained results suggest that for hours of maximum TEC the n-profile is broader than that assumed by the models.
