The positions and intensities of all vibrational transitions in the (ν1,2ν2) Fermi doublet region of (CO2)2 dimers are obtained by means of the variational method. The collision-induced absorption in compressed carbon dioxide is shown to be mainly due to dimeric absorption. An assignment of the ν1 and 2ν2 vibrational bands in the isolated CO2 molecule is performed by the consideration of the symmetries and intensities of dimeric vibrations.
