Black Holes from Stars to Galaxies -- Across the Range of Masses. Edited by V. Karas and G. Matt. Proceedings of IAU Symposium #

Observations of X-ray novae (XRNe) in quiescence are the primary means by which it has been possible to constrain the mass of the compact object in accreting binaries. Thus far, 20 systems have been dynamically confirmed as having a probable black hole primary. Typically observations are undertaken in the optical; however contamination from the accretion disc can be significant here. As such observations in the IR are to be preferred, where the flux from the secondary star is thought to be dominant. Here we present new IR observations of 2 quiescent black hole XRNe. We use these to constrain the contaminating flux and comment on its likely origin.
