A two dimensional model for the mesosphere between 50S and 50N and from 50 to 84 km was used to compute the positive and negative ion composition and the electron density of the D-region. From the neutral model, 10 selected neutral species were used. In this model the ionization is restricted to direct and scattering Lyman-alpha and the galactic cosmic rays to produce NO(+), N2(+), O2(+), N(+), and O(+). The ion model considers 26 positive and 11 negative ion species and is based on 123 different reactions. A pronounced seasonal dependence of the electron density and the ratio of positive cluster ions to molecular ion f(sup +) was found. We were able to show, that the mesospheric water vapour concentration is directly related to the parameter f(sup +). The discrepencies with respect to the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)-90 electron density model may be associated with the lack of accurate electron measurements in the lower mesosphere.
