Radiofrequency signals originating in lightning and recorded in space provide mechanisms through which ionospheric parameters can be assessed. Using the FORTE satellite, it has already been shown that transionospheric RF signals from lightning carry sufficient information to determine the total electron content (TEC) along a ray path between a source and receiver [Roussel-Dupre et al., 2001]. In this paper the detailed refractive properties of the ionosphere and the Faraday rotation of RF waves in the Earth's magnetic field are modeled. Applications of this model to FORTE data provide additional information on the vertical profile of ionospheric plasma density at the time and place of measurement. We will show that the method can serve as a "transmission ionogram" with very powerful parameter-retrieval capabilities. 1. Roussel-Dupre, R.A., A.R. Jacobson, and L.A.
