Three ionospheric probes were carried on the ESRO-4 satellite: a spherical gridded probe with a swept potential to collect positive ions, a Langmuir probe to measure electron temperature and vehicle potential, and a fixed-potential gridded probe to measure fluctuations in total ion density. ESRO-4 was placed in a polar orbit with an apogee of 1177 km and a perigee of 245 km on November 22, 1972, and ionospheric data of excellent quality were obtained until the spacecraft's reentry on April 15, 1974. The instrumentation is described, and early results are presented.
