Nearby massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) show evidence for compact ionised gas with spectral index ~0.6 consistent with a jet or disk-wind. However the properties of a large sample of MYSOs has never been studied. The aim of this proposal is simple then: to use our Galaxy wide sample of MYSOs from the RMS survey to determine whether all MYSOs behave in this fashion, and to consider whether the more luminous hypercompact HII regions, which have a similar spectral index, are an extension of this trend or are a completely separate phenomenon (eg a genuine HII region with an extremely dense core with a large density gradient).
