Results are presented for a comparison concerning the occurrence of two phenomena in the equatorial ionosphere: (1) the ionization ledge in the topside ionosphere and (2) the counter-electrojet in the E-region. About 170 ionization-ledge observations on magnetically undisturbed days, when compared with the diurnal variation of the difference between increments from the nighttime base level in the horizontal components of earth's magnetic field at Trivandrum and Alibag, reveal that the counter-electrojet, either partial or full in the afternoon, occurred on 70 per cent of these days. The morphological features of both phenomena (more frequent occurrence during solar minima than solar maxima, identical lunar-age dependence) are in conformity with the conclusion that the production mechanism for both is the same. Since a neutral anomaly is now known to be the cause of ionization-ledge formation, it is suggested that the same anomaly might also be responsible for the counter-electrojet.
