Ion mobility spectrometers are well known, highly sensitive instruments in analytical research. Recently new small, lightweight and low power consuming designs have been published, opening the possibility of miniature instrumentation for in-situ planetary research. Interesting applications are the analysis of trace constituencies in the Martian atmosphere, i.e. water molecules, longterm measurements of the Martian atmospheric composition or observation of volatile molecules likely to be released during deep soil drilling operations. Such instrumentation could be easily carried on small balloons, therefore offering the opportunity of in-situ observations of the atmospheric constituents in different heights and locations. In combination with a laser desorption system, as a vaporising and micro-drill system, one could analyse refractory material of planetary soils. Feasible designs and goals for ion mobility spectrometer instruments are discussed.
