The importance of ion-dynamical effects in the Stark broadening of optical hydrogen and singly ionized helium lines and the implications for high resolution spectroscopy and early-type main sequence and White Dwarf stars are discussed. It is concluded that unified theory calculations (Vidal et al. 1973; Schoening & Butler 1989) based on the quasistatic ion approximation yield line shapes appropiate for model atmosphere line formulation calculations. However, it is possible that effects could be observed at the very highest gravities. Such a possibility is the subject of a systematic analysis by Napiwotzki & Rauch (1993) in a subsequent paper.
