It has been shown that the main source of charged particles in the 65-95 km height region is the ionization of NO by Lyman-alpha radiation. The incorporation of the O(1D) + N2 reaction as an additional source of NO yields a good agreement between theoretical and experimental data on NO for the specified height region. The present study examines the role of the reaction in the formation of the ion composition of the lower ionosphere. Numerical results are presented on the following ion composition: O(+), O2(+), N(+), N2(+), NO(+), Y(+), O2(-), and Y(-), where Y(+) represents the total concentration of positive ion bunches and Y(-) represents the total concentration of negative ions.
