We propose observations of Io's plasma torus and atmosphere in support of the Cassini spacecraft flyby of Jupiter. Cassini carries the most powerful EUV spectrograph ever to observe Jupiter and offers the best chance to study the torus in the wavelength range where it emits most of its energy. But operational limitations will restrict the Cassini slit to be parallel to Jupiter's equator, while the torus actually wobbles +/-7°. The torus therefore will spend much of the time partially outside the Cassini slit. The 4m RC spectrograph slit can track the torus wobble (see Figure 1), and can therefore measure torus properties on its equator. The combined dataset will allow a far better inversion to torus plasma parameters than either dataset alone, and thereby better address the questions surrounding the origin of several unexplained structures in the torus. The proposed observations are scientifically important even without the Cassini connection: we will make the first globa! l inventory of chlorine in the torus through ļplus and ļplusplus observations, allowing a basic test of our hypothesis that salt is the source molecule of sodium and chlorine on Io. With the possibility of > 10x greater performance than our previous 2.1m observations, we may also detect new emissions as we have done in each of the past two years.
