The Crownpoint Institute of Technology (CIT), a two-year tribal college located in the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, is in the process of building an astronomy program capable of involving its students in research projects. CIT has recently received the National Science Foundation Tribal College and University Program (TCUP) award, which will support CIT in its efforts to achieve this goal. The focus of the TCUP grant is to support the expansion of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) facilities and course offerings, as well as offer monetary support to student interns who participate in scientific research programs developed by CIT faculty.
In this poster we will report on the progress that has been made in the development of the astronomy program at CIT including the integration of Navajo culture and philosophy into the astronomy curriculum, the participation of student interns in the commissioning of a 10-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and associated CCD imager, and the upcoming construction of a small facility on campus to house the telescope.
