Key developments in ionosphere research from new types of measurement using space vehicles are outlined. The usefulness of radio-propagation techniques in space research is discussed. Ground-based techniques such as incoherent scatter may be used to duplicate measurements made from space vehicles. The remote sensing of atmospheric minor constituents by optical techniques is reviewed.
