The angular resolution of a telescope proposed by Wolter (1952) for applications of X-ray astronomy can be improved by reducing the scattering of the X rays. A study was, therefore, conducted concerning the dependence of scattering on the glancing angle, the wavelength, and the polishing procedure. Basic aspects of scattering theory are discussed and a description of the experimental apparatus is given. The scattering relations considered by Beckmann and Spizzichino (1963) were used in the evaluation of the test results. A material, called Zerodur, was found to be the most suitable material for the mirror surfaces of X-ray telescopes.
